The tugging service of CAEN/OUISTREHAM is provided by the CCI of Caen.
The CCI of CAEN locally has the following tugboats:
These tugboats are perfectly suitable for manoeuvres in narrow waters and for the special configuration of the port of Caen-Ouistreham; the majority of the crew comes from ocean navigation, professionals of tugging, trained for these specific manoeuvres, difficult even dangerous.
The role of the tugging service in the port of Caen-Ouistreham is directly linked both to the place of the intervention and to the kind of manoeuvre required.
Hauling out, coming along-side, swinging (U-turn)
A tugboat is available 24h/24h, at the ferry post. According to the weather forecast, it gives an important physical and psychological help to these ships which carry out 2200 manoeuvres a year in the Caen-Ouistreham downstream port.
The presence of one or two tugboats during the manoeuvres at the locks garantuees safety for both the ship and the port infrastructures. During the manoeuvre, the tugboats have different functions : one tugboat at the back slows down the ship and another at the front guides it to come alongside.
Thanks to their mobility, their constant avaibility and their equipement aboard, the tugboats can quickly intervene in case of fire or pollution.
80% of the outer missions are carried out by the "Caen-Ouistreham 3"; it is the only tugboat equipped with a winch and a towrope 400 metres long.
The missions are diverse : coastal towing and, in the open sea, logistical support to other ships. With this type of tugboat, the total amount of staff is more important.
